Meme, Myself and AFI

I never do this, but Steve decided to start a meme where you categorize the AFI top 100 movie list according to your own tastes. I enjoy exercises in asserting subjective taste over critical consensus, so I couldn't resist. Partly I was just curious what my list would look like, so here it is. I have a hard time ranking any of these movies as "terrible." If they're on this list, they probably have some qualities to recommend them, so I probably enjoyed them at least a little. The stuff under "Not So Good" tends to be stuff that bored me, or turned out to be forgettable, or a let down, or for whatever reason just didn't click with me.

I'm pretty comfortable with being a LOTR hater, though.

I'm glad someone else has the courage to speak truth to power and list Blade Runner as "Not So Good."

"Hi, I'm Ridley Scott, and the concept of pacing means nothing to me."

I'm surprised you didn't list Star Wars and Raiders as great.

Why the ET hate?

Good post title. I've seen very few of the AFI movies (26), and for almost half of the ones I've seen (10) I walked away (Manchurian Candidate), zoned out (Annie Hall), or fell asleep (Pulp Fiction), so I don't think it's worth posting a list on my blog. Of what I remember:

GREAT: Godfather, To Kill a Mockingbird, Godfather 2, Fellowship of the Ring, Rocky, Forrest Gump
PRETTY GOOD: Singin' in the Rain, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Fargo, My Fair Lady
NOT SO GOOD: Titanic
TERRIBLE: Wizard of Oz, Snow White, Sound of Music, King Kong

The same way some people feel bullied by pretentious critics into saying that certain movies are great, Raiders and Star Wars have such rabid fans that I feel bullied by popular consensus. They are entertaining movies, but I feel no real connection to them. For the record, I prefer Raiders to Star Wars.

ET was a last-second addition to the Terrible list when I realized I was only ranking it as not-so-good out of obligation to popular opinion. I've only seen it once, and I remember very little besides the fact that I didn't really like it.
